The design of the built environment can have a crucial and positive influence on improving public health. In the past, architects and urban reformers defeat infectious diseases like cholera and tuberculosis by improving buildings. streets, clean water system and so on. However, today's architectural and urban design too often support unhealthy rather than healthy diets, and comfort rather than active daily lifestyles, and one of the most urgent health crisis in modern society became obesity and related diseases including diabetes. In 2010, The City of New York developed the active design guidelines to change these trends and create healthier buildings, streets, and urban space by providing specific strategies to architects, urban designers, and planners. This paper mainly focuses on building design strategies and how it can be combined with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The active design guidelines create opportunities for daily physical activity by firstly, encourage everyday stair use with proper location and motivational signage. Secondly, locate building functions to encourage brief walking route. Thirdly, provide facilities that support exercise and lastly, design pedestrian friendly building exteriors and massing. |
