Active design is environmental design that encourages stair climbing, walking, bicycling, transit use, active recreation, and healthy eating. Recently, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet cause the rapidly growing epidemic of obesity and its related chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers in New York City. The Active Design Guidelines aim to reverse these trends, by providing active urban and building design to have an essential role in improving public health. This paper presents active urban design strategies and specific planning that can promote physical activity. In this guidelines, the key health-promoting design measures were recommended for creating an active city such as mixed land uses, improve access to public transit system, increase access to healthy foods, improve access to open spaces and recreational facilities, design pedestrian-friendly streets with high connectivity, traffic calming features, and facilitate bicycling for recreation and transportation by developing continuous bicycle networks and incorporating infrastructure. These active designs indicate that the designing neighborhoods, streets, and outdoor spaces that encourage active transportation and recreation, including walking and bicycling can have a positive impact on the health in local residents. |
