The architectural characteristics of Municipal Library in France can be summarized in 4 points : legibility, compressibility, flexibility and natural lighting. Legibility can be realized through exterior elevation design describing formal identity and symbolic expression, horizontal and vertical dilatation of interior space. Compressibility can be made by layout of separated public, service, and stack zones and by minimization of the mouvement path in each zone. Flexibility can be realized through the free plan composition in using grand platform, in order to have changeable space composition. The introduction of natural lighting in adopting the interior patio, atrium, skylightprovides generous cultural space in library building, differentiated form commercial space. In children's library in Korea, variety of the materials, geometric forms and iron structure are used in order to express the individual independence of form, double level spaces, enormous platform plan and visual transparency are used for raised legibility in interior space. The number of stories restricted at 2 levels, allows to compress the space, and synthesis of reading, conservation and administration zones allowes effectiveness of functionality. Also the enormous reading room and universal structure will be able to confront in growth and change of program, aim the flexibility, and garden-patio, zenithal light, side window allow the influx of natural lighting. The 4 points of architectural characteristic of library building remain in individual quality and the creativity of each project. These are not isolated and independent elements but mutually complementary elements in library architecture. They should be integrated in architectural design and treated in project with hierarchy. |
