Based upon a simple geometric urban form, it develops the theoretical mathematical model that interrelates vertical distance of elevator movement, horizontal distance of automobile journey, and size of open space(greenfield). Numerical simulation confirms a non-linear relationship between the level of compactness and carbon emission; As the urban form becomes more compact, a decrease in carbon emission in transport and greenfield sectors outweighs an increase in building sector to some extent, but the opposite becomes true beyond a certain level of compactness.
