In most cases, visual cues are used as the main source for identifying and perceiving space. Therefore, in space design auditory aspects were nearly forgotten or mostly considered as unwanted noise that need to be reduced or get rid of. However, studies show that auditorial sense is a strong factor in cognitive and emotional experience of space. Murray Shafer describes this as 'soundscape', a very similar concept to landscape which concerns sounds from our environment as whole not as individuals, and claims that even though it so important it is often underestimated by designers. Therefore, soundscape in space design need to focus on sound environment as total space experience that is contextual. The purpose of this study is to understand meanings and characteristics of soundscape in space design and analyze how designers manipulated space in order to create and control soundscape. The researcher first carried out theoretical studies in order to find characteristics and design methods in soundscape design such as cognition of placeness, inducing circulation, auditorial cognition control, and combination of senses. Then 4 cases studies were carried out for analyzing detail design methods. Soundscape in design is not a familiar term therefore not many design projects were applicable, but it is hoped that this study is used as a stepping stone for understanding the importance of auditorial factors especially soundscape in design and also a theoretical guideline to create a more experiential space. |
