This study aimed to describe the formation of urban space in Gunsan, during the first half of 20th century. For that purpose, this study examined some momentums provoking the change of Gunsan and the built environments including buildings and other urban facilities. As a modern city, Gunsan started from the early rectangular city blocks which were planned for the foreign settlement. In early 20th century, Gunsan was constituted by the rectangular city blocks and the small administration area near port. Under the Japanese colonialism, the most influential impact on the formation of urban space in Gunsan was the construction of railway. In open port city, the construction process of railway was deeply connected to the construction process of port. The linear layers, such as floating piers at port, warehouses, railway and important buildings, formed the characteristic urban space of Gunsan. The moving of city hall, at the late 20's, strengthened the centrality of Jungang-ro. Jungang-ro was the main commercial street of Gunsan and also that of Japanese. As a result of that, the urban area of Gunsan was expanded and also Japanese residential area was expanded over the former Korean residential area. Outside the urban district of Gunsan, there were some heritages related to the large scaled farm managed by Japanese landlords. Those farms were also the characteristic urban space of Gunsan. |
