This paper examines the meaning of the ornament which is reflected in the architecture of Gottfried Semper’s architectural theory. The various phenomenons in contemporary architecture shows that the architectural interests focus on the surface of architecture and it appears change of the materials and development of technology. It arouses lots of interests about new tendency and concepts of ornaments in architecture. Semper defines the architecture as surface-art and he understands the origin of architecture is based on the concept of space. Architecture is understood as a object revealing a space and method restricting a space, not as structure. In this pont, the wall can be recognized as architectural expression of the values of the times and as the method to materialize the restricted spaces. This paper examines that the ornament is the essential elements in architecture, not subsidiary, in the meaning of that the surface, for Semper, is the artistic methode to dematerialize of the form, in which structural elements and ornaments can't be distinct from each other. In conclusion, this paper is an attempt to interpret Semper's thoughts on ornament intended through the architectural theory of Semper. |
