Because of this, there are problems related to the pressure difference and excessive air flow. Vertical shafts such as a elevator and a stairwell are the main airflow paths in the building. One approach to minimize stack effect problems is to lower the temperature of the vertical shaft, and reduce the magnitude of stack pressure difference on each floor. This study deal with investigation of the effectiveness of the passive shaft cooling. To do this, we measured the temperatures in the inside of the shafts(One is located in the middle of the floor, the other is located in the perimeter area), and analyzed the effect of the shaft’s cooling on the pressure distribution caused by stack effect. The temperature of the vertical shaft with the passive cooling was lower than the one without the passive cooling.
