The Gangnam Planning has dual meaning in the history of Korea's urban planning. With such dualism, the urban structure of Gangnam provides a very important clue to understand unique characteristics shown in Korean modern cities. This study assumes that catalytic factors have a significant role in changing the blocks. Although Aldo Rossi regards monuments in a city as major catalysts, Gangnam has different types of catalysts including public buildings, religious buildings, commercial roads, green areas and roads packed with private education institutions and accompanying education facilities.
