In the high rise building design, the designer applies the curtain wall(CW) by considering the building envelop for the dead load reducing and the aesthetic exterior of a building. Generally, CW consists of the reflective glazing such as Low-emissivity glazing for the cooling load reducing which creates specular reflection(SR) during the day time throughout the year. For this reason, CW will impact in the light pollution and create disability glares and excessive solar radiation in the neighborhood. Therefore, the design professional should be watchful of the SR effects in the neighborhood due to CW during design phase of the building. However, the estimation methods of SR angle, length and area are very complicated work and the studies on these methods are insufficient. This study aims to establish the estimation formula of SR with the high rise building and contribute in the estimation methods of SR angle, length and area. This study will utilize earth-sun geometry, apparent solar time, local time, vertical and horizontal shadow angle theories, and sets a square building with the height of 100m and the width of 30 m as the standard for the CW. The areas of SR with variation of CW directions during four seasons such as the spring equinox, the summer solstice, the autumnal equinox, the winter solstice have been calculated with the method established from the study. The method simulates the SR ratio on CW areas of four facades during the year. The study showed that the area of SR in the south, the south east, and the south west were the highest. In the design phase of a CW building, the design professionals can estimate to the potential of SR ratio with high rise CW through the use of the estimation method from this study. |
