Recently in Korea, violent crimes against children have been increasing and have become serious social issues. What is worse is that these crimes including Cho Doo-soon case and Kim Gil-tae case tend to occur near elementary schools, the place in which children should be protected safely. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop assessment criteria for elementary school crime prevention and to suggest improvements for outdoor space safety of elementary schools, in consideration of making elementary schools safer places. The research process of this study is as follows. First, data analysis was conducted to clarify the current status of crimes against children. Second, a checklist for physical environment of outdoor spaces of elementary schools was developed through precedent research. Third, using the checklist, field research was conducted against 6 elementary schools in Seoul city. Schools were selected after considering the crime rates of the districts and the number of entering students of the schools. From this research it is expected that there is an adverse relationship between the quality of physical environment of elementary schools and the crime rate. The suggestions for improvements are as follows: first, there should be simple and visible pedestrian passage around the schools; second, outdoor spaces such as play grounds are easy to be observed by the teachers and the guards; third, blind spots or hiding spaces near the schools should be removed or minimized; forth, vulnerable areas should be covered by CCTV surveillance. |
