Recently in the world, appropriate technology (AD) has come to the fore as one of the solutions for eradicating the poverty of underdeveloped countries. However, appropriate technology is core technology; thus, it eventually requires architectural technology embracing the entire life, but it has not been actively implemented due to a lack of materials and techniques. In addition, the perception that architecture should not be appropriate technology because of its large scale has been widespread; accordingly, it has not been recognized as appropriate technology. On the other hand, earth is a familiar material that has been used for so long and it has been considered a realistic alternative since it has suggested new solutions to housing and energy problems around the world today. Therefore, it is necessary to review and confirm the necessity of earth architecture as appropriate technology. In line with this, this study attempted to pave the way for earth architecture projects in underdeveloped countries and provide basic information, by reviewing its characteristics according to the standard of appropriate technology, bringing in the change of perception that architecture could become appropriate technology, and confirming the value of earth architecture as appropriate technology. Results showed that earth architecture was appropriate technology and the possibilities for its future development were confirmed through variously used cases. |
