The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among crime occurrences and social and neighborhood environmental characteristics in Daegu Metropolitan City from a environmental criminological perspective. In this study, three regression models are conducted; the three types of crime ratios (violent crimes, assault crimes, and larcenous crimes) that occurred in 2009 in Daegu were used as dependent variables, respectively. Results show that violent crimes are highly associated with population density, foreign population density, bar and nightclub density, jewelry shop density, single family housing density, the ratio of commercial land use to total size of "dong", and the ratio of parks to total size of "dong". This study also reveals that two types of crimes are related to social and neighborhood environmental variables in different ways. Two types of crimes are all associated with population density, foreign population density and the ratio of commercial land use to total size of "dong". On the other hand, assault crimes are affected by bar and nightclub density and single family housing density, but larcenous crimes are related to the population density of older residents and to jewelry shop density. The results of this study suggest that social and neighborhood environmental factors should be considered when creating policies geared toward creating safer urban environments. |
