This study examines a composition scheme of overseas production bases for small and medium enterprises(SMEs) by understanding the current status and drawbacks related to extending the business abroad and analyzing a demand for the construction of foreign industrial complexes. The main consequences are as follows. Firstly, the issues, that Korean companies in other countries have experienced, are legal and production factors and infrastructure investment. As regards, government may need to provide customized supports and extend localized assistances for SMEs. Secondly, Korean firms are mostly advanced in Asian region. Especially, SMEs focused on the manufacturing sector occupy a large number of them. They also tend to actively expand their businesses into Vietnam, Hong Kong, Indonesia and India. Thirdly, a considerable number of companies have undergone difficulties resulted from a lack of professionals, information and local experiences. With respect to the circumstance, building overseas industrial parks expect to integrate the similar sectors and reduce risks from the business expansion into foreign countries. Consequently, developing overseas industrial complexes require a long term scheme reflecting needs of the companies. Moreover, the distinctive supply strategy in each step is requested rather than supply centered provision that is generally employed in national development of industrial complexes in Korea. |
