The purpose of this paper is to suggest it is necessary to change the paradigm for the study of art museums. For this, the study did the following: First, it introduced theories that focused on the sociological aspects of space. Secondly, the study conducted a review on the previous studies of art museums and summarized their characteristics. Lastly, by applying the result of such contemplation to Griswold's 'cultural diamond,' what has been used for the analysis of art fields, this paper offered a proposal about the future studies of art museums. In specific, this study pointed out that the previous studies of art museums have mainly focused on the microscopic aspects such as visitors or artists rather than the art museum itself, and that the very few existing studies on art museum solely focused on the functional aspects of 'exhibition space.' In addition, this study proposed that in order to conduct studies on art museums in various aspects, both microscopic and macroscopic aspects need to be considered, especially on the sociological characteristics of art museums. |
