The purpose of memorial museum is not only commemorating victims or accident but asserting the fundamental value of human life. The memorial museum is moving in the space of social education and public awareness. The transition space is defined as the connecting space between two different spaces. The museum spaces are incomplete without transition spaces. The transition space is composed of physical elements, natural elements and plays various roles in the museum. The aim of this thesis is to find and compare the characteristics of the transition space in memorial museums specially regarding public crimes. Compared the transition spaces between 911 Memorial Museum and US Holocaust Memorial Museum, some characteristics are found as follows: 1) These two museums have dramatic and symbolic transition spaces with use of traces and architectural elements 2) The vertical walls, diagonal walls and floors, high ceilings and lights are mainly used for the transition space. 3) The entrances, pathways and halls are intentionally planned with architectural languages to transit visitor's emotion. 4) The transition spaces have emotional functions as concentration, continuation, change and adaptation for visitors. |
