South Korea is ever more actively exchanging with China, making developments in each field. Since this is not an exception in architecture and design, the future progress is expected. However, many of the existing researches on China focused on tradition and the past. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the present of China, and took an example of Wang Shu, the winner of Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2012, to raise awareness of China, which will be diversified in the future, by reviewing the progress and achievements of representative architects. By doing so, the study was conducted to discover the reasons for exploring the global market through the traditional culture of China. First, since Wang Shu had the specialty assessed only by his education and activities in mainland China and a high understanding of Chinese culture in many aspects, he was able to establish independent approaches and solutions on architecture on his own. Such characteristics were concluded as "critical regionalism" in five keywords of tradition, region, garden, material and experiment and identified to be applied in Osanbang, Xiangshan Campus of China Academy of Art and Ning Bo History Museum that were selected as examples. As a result, from the perspective of context, each project was developing in a continuous single experiment process, and it was able to figure out that the projects were expressed characteristically based on the creative interpretations of the differences with the existing environment despite the similarity in implementation methods of each project. This study intends to bring a sense of alterative on the regular aspects of the region and the culture created in the region by applying the above, and it aims to make possibility for the modern spatial design to respect for diversity. |
