Now, many cities in Korea are facing urban decline problems due to the decrease in population and economic slump in local cities, in addition to the aging phenomenon. Especially, gun-unit cities in regions are losing their functions as self-sufficient cities, since local competitiveness in population and industries is getting weaker and weaker. Therefore, it is supposed that sustained growth as autonomous cities will be no more impossible and the spatial structure of one area will change into a network city to perform present urban functions through a connection between cities and regions in future. The current local HOPE area project of Korea is part of regional connection schemes for network cities beyond the boundaries of city, gun and gu which were set to get over the decrease in population and rural area decline in local small cities. There are also local HOPE areas that consist of core city areas formed among Jinju as a central city, and Sacheon, Namhae and Hadong as component cities and farming and fishing village areas formed among Geochang, Hamyang and Sancheong as component cities in Gyeongnam area of the West. Therefore, this study aims to examine the residential environments connected to central cities in Gyeongnam area of the West, life services and travel patterns and see the recognition of the residential environments by analyzing the present state of residents' recognition and use depending on the shopping and purchase environments, cultural and leisure environments, medical service environments and educational environments. By doing this, this study provides basic data about local spheres of living and a reference for the local development policy. |
