University library, often called the heart of the university, performs the educational, cultural, academic and social-service functions. It should meet the informational needs of students, faculty and staff members whose academic enquiries require specialized knowledge. What needs to be pursued is a newer space that embraces the multi-cultural space for the community?the community that responds to the evolving information environment such as the development of computer and the information and communication technology. After the 2000s, while the university library in South Korea has been actively constructed and re-constructed, the strong interest has been directed to the library space that combines organically the media based on the concept of Information Commons, users, and services together to meet the changing needs of the users. In order to investigate the trends of the space study of the university library, this study analyzes the journal articles and conference proceedings published between 1981 and the end of 2014: it identifies the changing research trends by investigating the number of publications chronologically; and the publications are also classified by article keyword, research purpose, research space, research content and method. By objectively analyzing the trends of the university library space, we find that the research concern and focus have been shifting, based on the chronological characteristics, from the aspect of the arrangement or dimension to that of planning the ever-changing library space. In addition to its traditional role, we also redefine the function of the university-library space which has been evolving to serve as the social and cultural spaces for the community. The purpose of this study is to help reinventing the university library space by retracing and recasting such changes in the university library. |
