The envelope of the building is placed on outer-most of building and it composes the first level of perception. In contemporary architecture, the development of building materials and construction methods, the possibilities to realize, and the need from percipient make the envelope become not just a divider for interior/exterior spaces, but a place for expressing an architect’s idea. In this study, the envelope and the structure will be dealt together to find the spatial expressions through their relation. The subject is the works of Shigeru Ban who is well known for the green and humanitarian works. His works show following features; industrial and handcrafted at the same time, multi-functioning elements, temporal and permanent simultaneously, and give stimulus by using friendly materials/elements to enlarge the scale or place them in abnormal states. According to see clues of spatial expressions through the relation between the skin and the structure, their relation expands their meaning not only just the supporting system, but they can be a method to express spatial characteristics. |
