This guides the study to draw implications for systematic landscape planning, particularly by reviewing Landscape Characterisation that is now widely adopted in England. The research first explores how Landscape Characterisation, especially by Landscape Character Assessment(LCA), has been developed and used with the evolution of landscape planning of England from its origin to the adoption of the European Landscape Convention(ELC) and the National Planning Policy Framework(NPPF), which highlight democratic landscape planning with recognition of landscape`s contribution to social cohesion and sustainability.
