This study intends to show the changing architectural properties of existing void spaces within commercial facilities through quantitative analysis. Void spaces commonly regard to architectural factor to create multi-dimensional composition among separated floors in commercial facilities. Results show a tendency that the proportion of the void spaces has gradually increased in mixed-use commercial complexes. Further, the gradual changes in architectural planning are observed. In the earlier research sample, void space tends to create one single large and centered area penetrating every floors. It has now been changed to create more than one center space, and the size of each void space has gradually decreased. Moreover, small-sized void spaces are placed in communal spaces, where the possibility of movement increases. Unlike previous studies, which suggest designing proposals with characteristic based on analyzing each void space in mixed-use commercial complexes, this study addresses the changes in commercial facility types by theoretical consideration. Additionally, it covers the changes in the spatial expansion method and the very meaning of the void space. |
