One of the most important values of cultural heritages is that they cherish the memory of their time of making and use. As the very first western style architecture in the province, 6 separate buildings (4 residences of missionaries, a hospital and a mission school) of Yang Guan, characterized in style as Korean-Western mixture, are designated by the provincial government as the 133rd Local Tangible Cultural Properties. The composition of plan and elevation shows distinctive difference by the purpose of buildings as the residences are free and various in plan but those of the other two are rather simple. In terms of decorative elements, naturally from the brick masonry construction, such as slide-up windows, dormer windows, segmental arch lintels are applied with no exception. As the image maker of buildings, various roofs were used. Giving the most distinctive look, building No.3 applies a hip roof of polygonal plan shape whereas No.4 a gambrel roof with dormer window on the 2nd floor, No.2 a T-shape zinc roof with a 3rd floor window on a gable wall, which is different with the others that utilized Korean roof tiles. This research present that the elevational characteristics of the residences, school and hospital of western missionaries built in a different architectural environment and the use (purpose) of the building is the factor of differentiation among them. |
