In recent years, art has become an important keyword increasingly in urban regeneration related field. However, in many cases, it is very difficult to mention that those chllaenges bring out success practically. In this situation, this paper focused on the two remarkable cases, Echigo Tsumari and Setouchi Art Triennale in Japan. Both cases have in common that modern art work is combined with huge depopulated area with full of nature, one is mountainous, the other is islands area. The purpose of this study is to find out the charateristics of modern art in those two art festivals from the viewpoint of townscape. Fron this point of view, mainly the discourses of artsits, directors, and journalits appearing the festival related publications, magazines and newpapers was analysed. As a result, the following characteristics of modern art in two cases was found out. 1) The endemicity of mountainous and islands area is reflected in art works. 2) The memories of the people lived there in the past is expressed. 3) Modern civilization is questioned by presenting the scenery of time and place existing consistently. 4) Diverse participants group including inhabitants and volunteers creates the liiving scenery of life participation and collaboration. |
