The modern people are more increasingly cherishing individual value and desiring higher popular culture and quality of life. Due to this increasing desire, various cultural activities are being considered important. Accordingly, the modern people have formed complex cultural spaces combining various cultural functions including shopping, exhibition, and experience. As the spatial design area is combined with various fields, complex cultural spaces utilizing abandoned industrial facilities are being highlighted. Thus, the purpose of this study is, based on the analysis on the characteristics of convergence design, to propose a measure to use convergence design for complex cultural spaces utilizing abandoned industrial facilities. The study results can be summarized as below. First, complex cultural spaces utilizing abandoned industrial facilities, not like general complex cultural spaces, were found to be re-created as new spaces partially reflecting the history and features of the existing building through remodeling of abandoned plants. Second, as a result of examining the characteristics of convergence design for complex cultural spaces utilizing abandoned industrial facilities, elements of diversity, continuity, relationship, complementarity, and experience could be derived. Third, in complex cultural spaces utilizing abandoned industrial facilities, depending on their major functions, relationship, diversity, and experience were emphasized in the commercial space, exhibition space, and experience/education space, respectively. The results are expected to help more studies examine complex cultural spaces utilizing domestic abandoned industrial facilities based on the characteristics of convergence design. |
