자연환경에서 과학자는 물리학의 법칙과 재료과학의 원리를 도출하고, 과학기술 전문가들은 이들을 실제로 사용 가능한 기술로 변환시킨다. 그리고 건축가와 디자이너는 자연 대상물에서 나타나는 원리와 현상에서 도출된 과학기술을 기반으로, 혹은 직접적인 관찰을 통하여 건축물과 제품을 생산한다. 이와 같이 건축물의 형태는 자연환경과 내적, 혹은 외연적으로 관련을 갖고 있는데, 이는 자연형상의 직접적인 모방과 추상화 과정, 동식물의 유기체 성장원리의 응용, 그리고 기후와 지질학적 현상의 이용을 통해서 살펴볼 수 있다. 자연 형상의 모방은 자연 대상물의 구성요소 및 재료의 재현, 혹은 상징적?은유적 표현으로 나타나는데, 이는 여러 건축학자들의 수목기원설을 비롯하여 수많은 역사적인 선례들에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 건축물로의 확대에 따른 스케일상의 문제는 자연형상 내에서의 추상화 작업의 결과라 할 수 있는 수리적, 기하학적 비례체계를 통하여 해결될 수 있다. 자연의 동식물과 미생물에서 볼 수 있는 생장, 소멸하는 유기체의 성장 원리는 동식물의 구조에 의한 생체 모방의 경량구조, 식물의 증산작용에 의한 자연적인 자동화 과정, 그리고 모래를 교결(膠結)시켜 사암(砂巖)으로 변형시키는 미생물이 만드는 건축물 등의 사례에서 보이며, 이들은 자연환경에 적응하는 건축 형태 및 재료에 적용될 수 있다. 자연현상에서 재생 가능한 에너지원으로서의 태양열은 광발전과 집적화된 태양열 발전의 광범위한 이용을 통하여 유용한 생산자로 탈바꿈하였으며, 대기의 바람과 구름의 층운(層雲)은 투명한 건축과 물리적 재료로 한정되지 않는 공간을 만들어내는 능력을 보여주었다. 지질학상으로는 탄산칼슘과 염분의 부착 및 응집 현상이 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 이루어지는 석출작용을 통하여, 원세포가 건축물의 구조 및 외피를 성장 변화시키는 자연적인 과정을 살펴볼 수 있었다. |

In the natural environment, scientists draw the laws of physics and principles of material sciences, and technologists transform these principles into the practicable technology. Architects and designers produce the buildings and products based on the derived scientific technologies, or the direct observation from the principles and phenomena of natural object. As such, the building forms are intrinsically or extrinsically related to the natural environment, and they can be examined through the direct imitation and abstraction of natural images, the practical application of growth principle immersed in the organism like animals and plants, and the use of natural phenomena like climate and geology The imitations of natural images are represented with the direct reconstruction, or symbolic and metaphorical expression of shapes, components and materials in nature. They can be found in so many historical precedents including 'Out of Tree' theory of architectural historians. In magnifying the shapes of nature into buildings, the problems of scale can be solved through the mathematical and geometrical proportion hierachy like 'golden section' as abstraction. We can explore the growth principle of living organisms in the zoological, botanical, and microbial biosphere. Such are the cases with the following examples : the light-weight construction using the same structural principles as bird skulls and tree trunks, the self-actuated process based on transpiration, and the microbe crafted architecture transforming sand into sandstone. They can be applied to the forms and materials of buildings adaptive to natural environment. In the natural phenomena, a renewable solar energy had been transformed into the 'useful producer' through the extensive use of the photovoltaics and the concentrated solar power, the winds and the stratus clouds had showed the capacity to produce an architecture of invisibility and the space without reliance on physical material. It can be found in the geologically driven projects that the structure and envelope of building are grown through the deposition of calcium carbonate and salt. |
