(Background and Purpose)There has been a steady increase in interest among people about Korea and its culture, resulting in an increase in the number of tourists in Korea. Accordingly, there has been a gradual increase in the need for guest houses in Korea. Unlike hotels in remote locations, guest houses provide lodging facilities that are conveniently located so that tourists may experience Korea, mingle with local people, and learn about the culture. There are many types of guest houses, among which the traditional Korean-style house (hanok) is thought to be the most authentic for delivering Korean culture to visitors staying in such spaces. The purpose of this study was to determine how to express Korean identity by analyzing the spatial characteristics of a guest house and by interpreting the hanok concept and spatial characteristics for application in guest houses. Through a theoretical review, the elements required for each space would be drawn together, highlighting characteristics of the guest house. (Method) In order to apply certain aspects of the hanok concept to guest houses, the analysis will include concepts, structures, and characteristics of hanok, thus capitalizing on its potential value. Therefore, the guest houses where Korean identity is clearly expressed were selected by area for a comparative analysis in line with the case study framework. (Results) Hanok has various characteristics; for example, the main floor living room (daecheong) and the courtyard (madang) are connected to form the hub of the house where people come and go. These spaces can be also connected to the lounge of a guest house. As a lounge requires openness and diversity, it should be a space that enables accessibility and various activities for everyone. Room characteristics vary based on the number of guests; among the various types are dormitories. The characteristics of traditional doors and windows from hanok architecture can be combined to divide and connect space, instead of walls. For any connecting space such as a corridor or kitchen, various flows of human traffic can be envisioned to create, arrange, and join spaces to facilitate human interaction. (Conclusions) Guest houses can be used as lodging facilities and as culture experience spaces. As traditions change, it may be more desirable to identify the fundamental model and add a new interpretation to hidden sentiments in interpreting the concept of hanok, rather than simply emulating its conventional style. Through this study, hanok's cultural value and Korean sentiment can be reviewed to determine the correct directions for designing guest houses in which Korean sentiment can be experienced and learned. |
