Korea has promoted the construction of smart cities since the mid-2000s. Especially, U-City brand name has been consistently provided with a policy basis to promote the establishment of a systematic smart city. However, the environment for Smart City is changing drastically, but countermeasures against it are relatively inadequate. Therefore, in this study aims to offer the policy direction for securing the domestic smart city competitiveness by reflecting the features of this rapidly changing environment. Towards that end, the current position of South Korea in the global market was examined, and major trends and issues of smart city were derived. Then, we had in-depth interview with smart city-related domestic and overseas planning experts to derive implications by type, and to offer mid- and long-term implementation directions. The findings of this study revealed four important categories for securing smart city competitiveness - response to the 4th industrial revolution, advanced business management system, support for private-sector-led overseas market entry, and improvement of relevant laws. In particular, the preparation of strategies for penetrating global markets is essential for securing smart city competitiveness to take advantage of mega-trends such as 4th industrial revolution spreading globally, rather than lag behind them. At this juncture of time, the findings of this study are expected to offer the basic data for the government's 3rd future master plan for construction of smart city, and to provide the implementation direction for the sustained development of smart city. |
