This paper tried to understand the architectural philosophy of Kim, Swoo Geun who was one of pioneers for Korea Contemporary Architecture. He did his best to propose the new way of Korean architecture, many fabulous buildings were built as results of such a passion at architecture. He established three principles for architecture, one is Primary Space, the second is Secondary Space, the last is Ultimate Space. He developed his concepts for his works. Especially, Three churches of his works - Yangduk Cathedral, Kyeongdong Church and Bulgwangdong Cathedral - are examplary ones that he realized his architectural principles. They presented his principles well through being harmonious with light. Therefore, the aims of this paper is to analyze relations between space organization and light. Method: Three step study was conducted for the paper; Firstly, investigated modern and contemporary churches about spatial compositions since the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Secondly, analyzed his architectural philosophy and characteristics of spatial organization in churches. Finally, deducted relation of space and light through analyzing three churches. Results: According to the results of the study, Kim, Swoo Geun has greatly made progress of Korean contemporary architecture through realizing his philosophy about nature, tradition, spatial organization, and light. The noticeable characteristics of churches analysed in the paper are the detouring approach to main chapel, the hierarchical space organization, and the holy space created with light. |
