(Background and Purpose) As a result of the rapid growth of modern society, spontaneous redevelopment has reduced the space of communication and raised many social, cultural, and regional problems. Cities are thus mentioned to require the third space, as a potentially private and socially contributing space. However, in recognition of the insufficient understanding of the nature of the third space among modern people, this study uses Ray Oldenburg's third space theory, which suggests space requirements as spaces change, as the first objective to provide a correct understanding. In addition, we aim to contribute to the establishment of theory by confirming that Ray Oldenburg's theory is practically applied to domestic spaces. For this purpose, we confirm that such spaces are generated according to the demand of the public for a co-working space as a shared space, which is a social issue as a physical space similar to third space theory. (Method) We will discuss the third space of the abstract concept mentioned by Ray Oldenburg and elucidate the nature of the third space through interpretation of the theory. In the same way, the concept of a co-working space is examined, and the relation between the third space and co-working space in terms of the concepts and characteristics is examined by deriving the composition and characteristics of the space based on previous research. Finally, based on the spatial composition and characteristics of the above two spaces, the elements of the third space appearing in the co-working space are derived, and co-working spaces in Korea are selected to analyze the application of third space theory. (Results) The Third Space mentioned by Oldenburg in his book "The Great Good Place" emphasizes social interaction in internal actions. Eight characteristics of the third space proposed by Oldenburg are then summarized: neutrality, equality, activity, accessibility and accommodation, acceptability, universality, playfulness, and versatility. In addition, it was found that there are differences in the numbers and essential meanings in the process of comparing the derived features with previous studies. As a result, it can be seen that the third space has similarities in terms of the concept and characteristics to co-working spaces. Through the case analysis, it is confirmed that third space theory can be applied to co-working spaces as a whole. (Conclusions) This study provided an opportunity to confirm the relationship with space by approaching the third space theory sociologically and to confirm that the third space as an abstract concept can be applied as a specific element of physical space. Third space theory can be applied as a normative space theory to inform the spatial, regional, and urban approach of modern society as a qualitative aspect, not a function. |
