(Background and Purpose) While Alvaro Siza is known as an architect with particular and poetic expression, he is in fact an architect who puts emphasis on surroundings and analyzes earlier sketches to avoid losing even small contexts. While Siza's works have been interpreted and analyzed in different ways, this study on building disposition considering the site context offers another effective way to determine the essence of Siza's architecture. (Method) First, the elements that influenced the building disposition of Siza's architecture will be clearly identified. Second, the formal types of 24 works will be analyzed. Because there are many cases and types, it is difficult to capture all of them. Thus, the scope of this research will be limited to building dispositions that can be clearly defined by plans. Third, to analyze the characteristics of the composition principals, the study is constructed to categorize various cases of composition types. Finally, based on the results of the analysis, the interrelationships between types and compositions will be presented. (Results) The analysis derived the following correlations according to type of disposition form and composition. First, 2 types of composition methods are categorized by regulation lines. One is a type involving internal regulation lines, which are the diagonal lines of the site. The other is a type involving external regulation lines derived from a specific contextual point of the site. Second, in the case of complex sites, which have multiple axes or two axes, another neutral axis is used between the axes to offer the sensation of change. Third, there are also 2 composition types that have few or no relation with the axes of the site. This case particularly occurs when the site is relatively larger than the building in order to provide a delicate distinction from the site context. Fourth, for alignment with the oblique line of the site, the serrated form, articulated as several masses, is used. Furthermore, Siza uses a particular disposition method where a smaller part of the building plays the role of anchoring the site and connecting it with the other main part of the site. (Conclusion) After categorizing and analyzing all of Siza's works concerning building disposition with respect to the site context, this study concludes that Siza recognizes the context as a decisive element of the building disposition of the site and that he provides a subtle sensation of mass and space by using changes in various scales by creating a neutral axis or by composing independently from the axis of the site. This study clarifies Siza's particular interpretation of surroundings and the method of building disposition. |
