De Stijl is the movement which took place in Netherlands in 1917. De Stijl is a Neo-formal art movement with paintings, architecture, and design with Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg as the central figures. The aesthetic significance of De Stijl, which emphasized the artistic expression of spiritual rather than the reproduction of nature, has maintained its influence even to the present time. This research is about a study on the relationship and its occurring dynamics in Fine arts and architecture of De Stijl movement. This paper especially analyzes the early paintings and architectural work of Theo van Doesburg through investigating the historical researches and analyzing the spatial elements and its relations through visual and stereo analysis method. To begin with, this research first analyzes the ideology of De Stijl and its historical, geographical, philosophical, religious, etymological background and figures out the painterly expression of the ideology of De Stijl, which is revealed in Theo van Doesburg's early paintings. Through the above research method, this paper analyzes: first, the application of the formative elements of paintings in De Stijl architecture; second, the relationship between the formative elements of painting and architecture and its occurring dynamics. In detail, this research discovers that the vertical and horizontal relation, conflict and harmony relation, gravity and weightlessness relation, and repetition of formative elements elicit dynamics which gives vitality to Fine arts and architecture. In conclusion, this research have found a dynamic energy that is born in various relations of plastic elements. In other word, this study rediscovered the historic significance and value of Theo van Doesburg's new conception of modern architecture. |
