Purpose: This study analyzed the application of Japanese traditional architecture and the elements of contemporary architecture through the material granulation by Kengo Kuma, a Japanese architect. This study would like to confirm the characteristics of the modern interpretation of traditional Japanese architectural elements through the case study. Method: In this study, the nine cases of Kengo Kuma's works, which expressed Japanese tradition, using the various materials through the granulation were selected as representative examples. In the selected cases, the architectural materials and elevation designs used to express the tradition were identified. We then analyzed the methods of modernizing tradition through the differentiation of materials. Result: Kengo Kuma used his architectural philosophy, Granulation, to interpret Japanese tradition from a conceptual standpoint, beyond simple appearance. Kengo Kuma particularized tangible and intangible materials (Lv. 1). The material was then combined or the hole between the material and the material was then polarized again (Lv. 2). He modernizes tradition through the material granulation. |
