Cities change; they are defined by the lives of its citizens and constantly (re)establish the relationships with its industry and economy. Garibong-dong, Seoul is a region that reflects the history of industrialization in Korea and its general social changes. In the 1960s, Garibong-dong was transformed from a rural area into a residential area after the establishment of Guro Industrial Complex in the region. However, due to the major change in Korean industrialism in the 1980s and 90s, the Guro Industrial Complex has been reorganized into Seoul Digital Industrial Complex, which then lead to the influx of the Korean-Chinese and Chinese population into Garibong-dong. Garibong-dong was designated as a redevelopment zone in 2003, but later lifted in 2014. Now with the democratic participation of the regional community, urban regeneration project is in progress in Garibong-dong. Findings suggest that the urban structures of Garibong-dong has been consistent and developed in its history, regardless of the changes in residents. Focusing on the urban history in Garibong-dong, this study examines the changing features and structures of Garibong-dong, comprehensively analyzing its core elements of urban tissue ? path, plot, buildings and programs. Therefore, this study gives significance in establishing the basis for the research and urban planning that will be conducted in Garibong-dong. |
