Social exchange methods and scope has expanded and diversified due to the development of information and communication in modern society. However, as face-to-face exchanges have been reduced, it has been difficult to form emotional and psychological bonds with people, which have caused social problems of the marginalization phenomenon. In response, the government is emphasizing the communities revitalization and proposing various shared spaces and community spaces in the national policy dimension. One of the government plans is promoting public libraries as community facilities. The purpose of this study is to present the architectural characteristics of public libraries as a bridge for communities revitalization and the strengthening of local identity as a hub of local communities. Public libraries serving as local community hubs within the last five years were selected to derive spatial characteristics through analysis based on the theoretical consideration of the local community, and the ten principles of New Urbanism which show the spatial structure and composition to revitalize communities. Through this study, we aim to confirm the relationship between architectural elements including the composition, arrangement, and materials of physical space, and communities revitalization, the identity of the region. It will also serve as the basic guideline for laying the direction of public library planning as a future local community hub. |
