The Gwacheon National Science Museum, which was built in 2008 and has been providing various exhibition contents up to now, needs to examine the internal and external public spaces and improve the design to present a role and a new vison of the largest national science museum. The analysis results of current situation for the space design of the Gwacheon National Science Museum showed that although the external space consisted of various outdoor exhibitions and interesting experience programs, association between the respective exhibition areas was lacking. Furthermore, because majority was employing designs of direct expression method, the assessment score was low in the aesthetic perspective. In the internal spaces, the arranged facilities did not secure the territoriality. Furthermore, because the infographics did not have unified system, modification was required for them. To improve the space design of Gwacheon National Science Museum, this study defined the spatial characteristics with keywords of interest, imagination, and harmony, and aimed to propose a space design suitable for them. As a result, this study proposed to improve the designs of external entrance, external walls, and sculptures by using individual artworks in a way of attracting people’s “interest” through participation of individual artists suitable for circumstance and location. In addition, design improvement was proposed for the middle path of subway entrance, front side square, ticket booths, and planetarium as the main axis of the science museum in a way of arousing “imagination” of visitors by applying a storytelling together with a consistent design. Furthermore, design improvement was proposed for the internal spaces such as Eoullim Hall, connecting corridors, and Children’s Science Cafe in a way of “harmonizing” with the entire science museum. |
