(Background and Goal of Study) Contemporary architecture has been freed from the constraints of building materials, styles, environment, and so on, because of developments in scientific technology, resulting in the emergence of various architecture forms. In the 1980s, “Critical Regionalism” became known, and efforts were made to recover the regionality and historicality of architecture, which had been weakened, and to combine the progress and purity that Modernism had pursued. On this basis, in China, architects endeavor to inherit the traditional architectural styles and at the same time reinterpret them from the current perspective. Among these remarkable Chinese architects is Wang Shu, who became the first Chinese to be awarded the Pritzker Architectural Prize in 2012. Wang Shu considers tradition and regionality as important values; therefore, he reflected on the indigenous history and culture of the regions deeply, reproduced the traditional spatial concept with modern methods, and became a representative in practicing Critical Regionalism. In light of the literature on the perspective of Critical Regionalism, this study aimed to analyze the characteristics of the buildings constructed based on it, apprehend the sources and attributes of the materials, and enable them to be used as a reference to forecast the future direction of traditional Chinese architectural styles. (Method) Based on the theory of Critical Regionalism, and focusing on Hangzhou and Ningbo in the Jiangnan area in China, which were built in the 2000s, I visited the buildings that Wang Shu had worked on, and proceeded with the research with an emphasis on the characteristics of the materials used on the buildings. Furthermore, I researched on Wang Shu’s architecture philosophy and Critical Regionalism through domestic and international theses and references on traditional architectures and regionality. Based on the literature, I studied the characteristics of materials that were used on the buildings. (Results) The analysis showed that Wang Shu’s architectures combined natural materials and artificial materials, and, reflecting on the characteristics of contemporary architecture, it brought the structures reflected by traditional Chinese ideas and the regional characters together. (Conclusions) By substantializing his experimental architecture, Wang Shu is proposing a certain direction about the way to express traditional culture in contemporary architecture. While adhering to the critical attitude about the standardized architecture of the contemporary internationalism style, recognizing the progress of technology, and pursuing the harmony between traditional regional arts and philosophy based on the firm philosophy of architecture considering the traditions of cities and regionality as important values, Wang Shu’s architecture proceeds by blending the traditional indigenous factors, his own ideas, and the needs of the period. The realization of Wang Shu’s Critical Regionalism architecture gives direction to architects today to express the traditions and cultures in history and time. |
