This research is to study space planning of public library from six Public Libraries of the Year by IFLA since 2014. It identified new roles, trends and plans of public libraries through literature reviews as well as case analyses on those libraries chosen by IFLA. Those resulted in the following suggestions. The first, the role of public libraries as a main community has been emphasized. For this, libraries are placed nearby downtown or waterfront, easily recognized and accessed. Also, they attract people through open spaces linked with squares and parks. Moreover, they play roles of local landmarks with modern architectural concepts. The second, due to decreasing needs for data usage, an interior space has been planned for meetings and interactions in order to attract visitors. To this end, concepts as the multi-functional central space, the vertical void space, and the visual view connecting in-and-outside were applied. The third, as the range of users' backgrounds is getting diverse and the providing programs scope is expanded, new types of educational spaces and digital services are spreaded. Therefore, the research represents that it should be considered an integrity, multi-function, and daily life for space planning of public library. |
